The Re-Birth of the Driftless
A post on the history and flies of the Wolf River got me to thinking about the Driftless. As you see, the area and the trout fishing we maybe take for granted has not always been what it is now. In fact, it really was not that long ago that Driftless fisheries were mostly stocked and not self-sustaining like they are now. Today, over much of the Driftless Area, if it is a blue line on a map, it holds trout. It has not always been that way, a fact we should celebrate but also

Fisheries Management Topics: Intro to Population Dynamics
This is a post written by Jason Freund, originally for The Scientific Fly Angler blog, which we are publishing on the Coulee Region Trout Unlimited website . Populations are incredibly complex as they are always changing - hence why we talk about population dynamics. The factors responsible for those changes are a mix of unpredictable (weather, floods, fish kills, etc.) and somewhat predictable (interactions among individuals - competition, predation, etc.). However, there ar

Exploring Wisconsin's Driftless Area: A Fly Angler's Guide
The Driftless Area covers about 24,000 square miles (over 15 million acres) and goes by a host of names - the Coulee Region, bluff lands or bluff country, the Paleozoic plateau, or a host of other names. The Driftless Area occurs because Lake Superior's depth along with the highlands between the Driftless Area and Lake Superior helped divert glaciers around this area. Although often treated as a rather homogeneous area, it is much more diverse than we often recognize.

Density-Dependent and Density-Independent Population Regulation
Density-dependent population regulation occurs when the demographic rates - those birth, death, immigration, and emigration rates mentioned earlier - change as a function of the population's density.

What Did the Driftless Look Like?
I can't be the only person that has this wish that I could go back to see what the world looked like before our human population boomed.

Around the Heart of the Driftless - Links to Online Resources
Coulee Region Trout Unlimited is situated in the heart of the Driftless Area . CRTU is home to hundreds of miles of trout streams filled with wild Brook and Brown Trout. Our chapter includes La Crosse, Crawford, Juneau, Monroe, Richland, and Vernon Counties - all counties with a great number and diversity of trout streams. The best description I have seen of Driftless streams is that they are sidewalk to street wide. The streams are generally not large and all but a few pool

Update from June 2020
Here is what is happening in the Coulee Chapter. The corona virus pandemic led to the cancellation of our last three chapter meetings and presentations. Sadly, we have also seen several other events we sponsor or volunteer also be cancelled: Cozad's Driftless 1Fly, Coon Valley Trout Fest, Tainter Creek Stream Day, work day with SEWTU at Esofea Park, and the Youth Outdoor Fest. It is disappointing that these outreach events didn't happen, we will prepare to be back with the
